BEIJING, Dec. 19 -- "The Taiwan question remains the most important and most sensitive issue in China-US relations. We urge the US to stop arming Taiwan and seriously honor its commitments," said Chinese Defense Spokesperson Senior Colonel Wu Qian on 19 December in his reply to media query about the newly announced US arms sale plan to Taiwan.
According to media reports, the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency recently announced a USD 300 million sale of life cycle support and equipment to Taiwan to maintain its Command, Control, Communications, and Computers (C4) capabilities.
In response, Defense Spokesperson Wu pointed out that the US's arms sale to China's Taiwan region seriously violates the one-China principle and the stipulations of the three China-US joint communiqués, especially the August 17 Communiqué , seriously undermines China's sovereignty and security, harms peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, and sends wrong signal to the "Taiwan independence" separatist forces. "China is strongly dissatisfied with and firmly opposed to such move," he said.
"We urge the US to stop arming Taiwan and seriously honor its commitment to not supporting 'Taiwan independence', stop interfering in China's internal affairs, and avoid going further on the wrong and dangerous track," stressed the spokesperson, adding that "using Taiwan to contain China" is bound to fail, and "seeking independence by force" is a dead end.
