BEIJING, Aug. 1 -- "The US's act of providing military aid to China's Taiwan region grossly interferes in China's internal affairs, seriously undermines China's sovereignty and security interests, and gravely threatens peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait. China is firmly opposed to this and has lodged stern representations with the US," said Senior Colonel Tan Kefei, spokesperson for China's Ministry of National Defense, when answering a media query on Tuesday.
According to a recent notice released by the White House website, the US will provide Taiwan with $345 million worth of military assistance, including equipment and training. This is the first time for the Biden administration to provide military assistance to Taiwan via "presidential drawdown authority".
Senior Colonel Tan pointed out that the Taiwan question concerns China's core interests and is a red line that cannot be crossed in China-US relations. Still lost in delusions of hegemony and trapped in Cold War mindset, some forces in the US insist on strengthening military ties with Taiwan through ill-intentioned moves like arms sales, military aid and joint training, encouraging and instigating provocative actions by the "Taiwan independence" separatist forces, and intensifying cross-strait tension and confrontation.
“We urge the US side to stop all forms of military collusion with Taiwan and avoid going further down the wrong and dangerous path. The wheel of history rolls on towards China's reunification, and it will not be stopped by any individual or any force. The Chinese PLA will closely follow the situation across the Taiwan Strait, always stay on high alert, resolutely defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity, and firmly safeguard peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait,” said the spokesperson.
