WAU, South Sudan, June 21 – The 13th Chinese Peacekeeping Horizontal Engineering Company to the UN Mission in the Republic of South Sudan (UNMISS) participated in the commemorative activities at the Youth Centre in Wau at invitation, and donated supplies to local children on June 16.
The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) designated every June 16 as the International Day of the African Child in 1991, aiming to draw attention to the issues facing children in Africa, especially those extremely impoverished.
The event this time was jointly held by several parties including the Wau State child protection organization of the UNMISS and other child protection partners.
During the event, Chinese peacekeeping troops donated pencils, drawing boards, footballs and other school things, as well as various cultural and sports equipment, to seven schools in Wau City.
Over the years, Chinese peacekeepers had taken the initiative to provide assistance on many occasions, fully demonstrating their humanitarian spirit, giving strong support to the smooth development of the UN's child protection work, and effectively promoting the development of the child care cause in South Sudan, said Erasmus Migyikra, the Child Protection Officer of UNMISS.
Since deployed in the mission area in December 2022, the 13th Chinese Peacekeeping Horizontal Engineering Company to the UNMISS has been enthusiastically carrying out humanitarian assistance activities in addition to completing construction tasks. They have provided free medical service and living supply donations for the locals, and helped them with street cleaning work, which have won praise from the UNMISS and local residents.
