WAU, SOUTH SUDAN, Sept. 4 (ChinaMil) -- More than 50 new-style prefab houses built by the 8th Chinese peacekeeping engineer detachment to South Sudan (Wau) for the Sector West of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) were put into use on September 3.
The current situation in South Sudan continued to be turbulent amid constant conflicts between political factions and increasing number of refugees. The old-fashioned prefab houses in the UN camps were in a dilapidated condition after over ten years of wear and tear.
To transform and upgrade the old-fashioned prefab houses as soon as possible and cope with the increasingly severe security situation, the Chinese peacekeeping engineer troops worked hard and successfully completed building more than 50 new-style prefab houses equipped with air-conditioners and shower rooms, which effectively guaranteed the deployment of UN peacekeeping operations.
The head of the evaluation department of the UNMISS spoke highly of the construction of prefab houses and praised the excellent work done by the Chinese peacekeeping engineer detachment in the engineering work of the mission area.
While successfully completing the missions assigned by the Sector West of the UNMISS, the Chinese peacekeepers also provided vital engineering assistance for other troop-contributing countries, the head added.
It is learnt that in addition to the normal road construction and scene leveling tasks assigned by the Sector West of the UNMISS, the Chinese peacekeeping engineer detachment also takes on tasks such as the construction of barracks. They have been regarded as a multi-talented engineering support power by the UNMISS.
Since its deployment to the mission area at the end of September last year, the Chinese peacekeeping engineer detachment has repaired more than 500 kilometers of roads for the “Kuajok-Wau-Tonj main-supply route (MSR)” and completed more than 100 engineering support tasks assigned by the UNMISS.
