JUBA, South Sudan, Nov. 16 (ChinaMil) -- A groundbreaking ceremony to mark the beginning of the Logistic Support Line project undertaken by the 8th Chinese peacekeeping engineer battalion to Southern Sudan (Wau) was held in Wau, a city in west Southern Sudan, on Wednesday.

Angelo Thabang, governor of Wau State, attended the ceremony, saying that he believed the project will greatly help promote the economic development, goods circulation and people’s life in Southern Sudan.

The 563 km main road runs through Southern Sudan from south to north and acts as the lifeline for transportation of logistics supply and humanitarian relief materials of the United Nations Mission in Southern Sudan, as well as a major traffic artery in the country.

However, damaged in years of wars, crushed by vehicles and eroded by rainfalls, many sections of the road have been covered with ravines and gullies, which makes it hard for vehicles to pass and severely impedes normal transportation of supplies.
