BEIJING, October 24 (ChinaMil) – The US assigned its naval vessel to enter China's territorial sea in Xisha without authorization on October 21. The Chinese Ministry of National Defense (MND) firmly opposed its actions and lodged solemn representations against the US on the same day.
The US guided-missile destroyer USS Decatur entered Chinese territorial sea in Xisha without authorization on October 21. Chinese Navy's guided-missile destroyer Guangzhou and guided-missile frigate Luoyang identified and verified the US vessel immediately and warned it to leave, according to the Chinese MND.
The Chinese government issued a Declaration on the Baselines of the Territorial Sea in May 1996, which expressly defined the territorial sea baseline of China's Xisha Islands. It was a serious violation and intentional provocation for the US to assign its naval vessel to enter China's territorial sea with full knowledge of the Declaration. China firmly opposed the US actions and lodged solemn representations against the US, the Chinese MND said.
The South China Sea situation is showing positive signs now thanks to the united efforts of all countries in the region. The US naval vessel's entry into Chinese territorial sea at such a moment revealed its intention of making trouble in the region and fishing from troubled waters, which showed the world its true color - a trouble maker in the South China Sea, the Chinese MND claimed.
China will stand side by side with all regional countries and firmly safeguard regional peace and stability, the Chinese MND stressed
The Chinese and American militaries have steadily developed their relations in recent years and gained new ground in building mutual trust mechanisms and managing and controlling risks. But the recent violation and provocation on the US part seriously harmed their mutual trust and went counter to the bilateral efforts to build a new model of major-country relationship and mil-to-mil relations, the Chinese MND said.
China strongly urges the US to respect China's national sovereignty and security concerns and refrain from making further mistakes. The Chinese military will intensify sea and air patrol as needed and step up its defense capability building to firmly safeguard national sovereignty and security, the Chinese MND stressed.
