China to explore civilian ships' great potential for national defense

  BEIJING, June 12 (ChinaMil) -- China's national transport war-preparedness office for national defense gathered about 130 people from the coastal transport war-preparedness system, military transport system, the China Classification Society (CCS) and shipping enterprises in Shanghai on June 4, 2015 for a training session on the Technical Standards for New Civilian Ships to Implement National Defense Requirements (hereinafter referred to as the Technical Standards).

  The Technical Standards is co-compiled by the Shipment Military Representative Office of the PLA Nanjing Military Area Command (MAC) and the CCS Shanghai Specifications Institute. It was officially approved and promulgated for implementation as a national military standard in March this year.

  Consisting of six parts - general rules, container ship, roll-on-roll-off ship, multipurpose ship, bulk cargo ship and general cargo ship, the Technical Standards specifies the performances, purposes and main items and design requirements for new civilian ships to meet the national defense requirements.

  The implementation of this military standards for civilian ships makes it possible for China to turn the great potential of its civilian ships quickly into military strength for national defense and will considerably enhance the PLA's strategic projection capability and maritime support capability.
