Fifth Xiangshan Forum kicks off in Beijing

  BEIJING, November 21 (ChinaMil) – The China Association for Military Science (CAMS) held the opening banquet for the 5th Xiangshan Forum on the night of November 20, 2014.

  In his speech at the opening banquet, Gen. Liu Chengjun, chairman of the CAMS and president of the PLA Academy of Military Sciences (AMS), proposed several suggestions on building the Asian community of common destiny.

  Liu said that it needs to advocate a new security concept for Asia which is common, comprehensive, cooperative and sustainable, it requires to strengthen defense and security dialogues and enhance strategic mutual trust, and it demands to build a new framework for regional security and cooperation, adhere to multilateralism, oppose unilateralism and military alliances that target third parties, and jointly develop a new mechanism for regional security and cooperation through equal dialogues and mutual beneficial cooperation.

  "We believe that the Asian people have the will and dream to realize permanent peace of Asia, and the Asian countries have the capability and wisdom to build a safe Asia," Liu stressed.

  Kevin Rudd, former prime minister of Australia, attended the banquet and delivered a speech. He expressed that the Asia in the 21st century should choose a peaceful future, rather than repeat the mistakes made by Europe that involved so many destructive wars. Countries within the Asian-Pacific region should cooperate to build a security framework.

  Lieutenant General Wang Guanzhong, deputy chief of general staff of the PLA, and General Sun Sijing, political commissar of the PLA Academy of Military Sciences, attended the opening banquet.

  It is learnt that founded in 2006, the Xiangshan Forum is an academic exchange platform for security and defense held by the CAMS. It is held once every two years, and has been successfully held for four times. The forum is upgraded from a track-2 event to a track-1.5 high-end Asian security and defense forum from this year, and will be held once every year.

  Meanwhile, leaders from the defense authorities or armed forces of the Asia-Pacific countries, the persons-in-charge of some standing institutions of international organizations, important former military and political officials and famous scholars will be invited to the forum.

  The 5th Xiangshan Forum is themed by "Win-win Cooperation: Build the Asian Community of Common Destiny", and has three topics, namely regional security framework, regional maritime security and regional anti-terrorism. Over 300 people, including the delegations of the defense ministries or armed forces from 47 countries, representatives of 4 international organizations, and Chinese and foreign experts and scholars, attended the forum.
