China to boost military cooperation with Maldives and Malaysia

  BEIJING, November 21 (ChinaMil) – Chinese Defense Minister Chang Wanquan met on Thursday afternoon with Mohamed Nazim, minister of defense and national security of Maldives, and Hishammuddin Hussein, defense minister of Malaysia, who came to China to participate in the 5th Xiangshan Forum, which opened on Nov. 20 in Beijing.

  During his meeting with Nazim, Chang said that China and Maldives are traditional friendly neighbors. In September 2014, Chinese President Xi Jinping paid a success visit to Maldives and reached consensus with Maldives' President Abdulla Yameen on the future development of the relations between the two countries, Chang added.

  He hoped the militaries of the two countries to strengthen exchange of visits and explore new fields of cooperation to inject new vitalities into the development of relations between the two countries.

  Nazim said that the Maldives is committed to enhancing military exchange and cooperation with China, especially the cooperation between the two militaries in such fields as personnel training and maritime security, to push forward the further development of the bilateral military relations between the two countries.

  During his meeting with Hishammuddin, Chang expressed that China has been always regarding Malaysia as an important strategic partner in the region and attaches importance to developing the friendly and cooperative relations between China and Malaysia.

  Chang was satisfied with the good cooperation carried out by the two militaries in recent years in the fields of defense consultation, exchanges among military academies, and exchange of port calls by naval ships.

  Chang told his Malaysian counterpart that China is willing to work with Malaysia to continuously push forward the exchanges in various fields, deepen the bilateral cooperation and the cooperation under the framework of the enlarged meeting of the ASEAN defense ministers, so as to make positive efforts to enrich the contents of the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries.

  Hishammuddin praised the close contacts and good cooperation between the defense departments and militaries of Malaysia and China. The Malaysian military is willing to make joint efforts with the Chinese military to deepen pragmatic cooperation and promote the continuous and stable development of the military-to-military relations between the two countries, Hishammuddin added.
