WPNS 2014 wraps up with bumper results

  QINGDAO, April 23 (ChinaMil) -- The 14th Western Pacific Naval Symposium (WPNS) biennial meeting was closed in Qingdao on April 23, 2014. Naval leaders and representatives from 25 countries attended the closing ceremony.

  Admiral Wu Shengli, member of the Central Military Commission (CMC) and commander of the PLA Navy, who is also chairman of this year's WPNS, delivered a speech at the ceremony.

  The navies from different countries had heated discussions, exchanged ideas and shared viewpoints during the WPNS annual meeting, said Adm. Wu in his speech. The symposium’s anticipated goals of broadening horizons, enhancing mutual understanding and deepening friendship have been reached, he said.

  The Chinese Navy commander suggested that in order to achieve better and faster development of the WPNS and greater common benefits, all the member states of the WPNS should continue to contribute more to the symposium, make pragmatic efforts to carry out in-depth cooperation, create new channels of cooperation.

  Adm. Wu called on navies of all the participating countries to take active measures to effectively implement Code for Unplanned Encounters at Sea and extend strategic influence of the WPNS.

  At the two-day-long WPNS biennial meeting, attendees passed the Code for Unplanned Encounters at Sea, approved Pakistan to attend the WPNS as an observer state, held special-topic discussions centering on the theme of "cooperation, trust, win-win", and listened to the report on the search for the missing plane MH370, had brainstorms on the methods and modes for joint maritime search-and-rescue.

  The WPNS 2016 will be held in Indonesia with the Indonesian Navy being the host of the symposium.
