BEIJING, Feb. 7 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese military official has called for "solidly" advancing preparedness for military struggle in order to build a powerful nation and army, according to a statement issued on Thursday.
Xu Qiliang, vice chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC), made the remarks during recent inspection tours of troops stationed in northwest China and Beijing-based media organizations mainly covering military news.
Xu said beliefs in Marxism and socialism with Chinese characteristics, and confidence in the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, should be strengthened in the army.
The military should "absolutely comply with the command of the CPC Central Committee, the CMC and Chairman Xi," said the military official.
Preparedness for military struggle should remain the priority, and combat power should be "the only and fundamental criteria" for the army, said Xu, who is also a Political Bureau member of the CPC Central Committee.
Profound evolution of the form of war and combat modes should be grasped, he said, adding the army should have future battlefields, missions and tasks in mind, and deepen the study of military operations.
Xu also ordered military news organizations to serve soldiers and officers, the overall interests and the improvement of combat power.
CMC Vice Chairman Fan Changlong also stressed combat power while on a similar recent inspection tour by calling on military officers to adopt "real combat criteria" in military training so as to meet future wartime needs in the information age.
